ALEXA 65 for color depth and detail on commercials
ARRI Rental’s large-format ALEXA 65 system is increasingly being used for commercials, as well as feature film projects. Matias Boucard recently combined the ALEXA 65 with Prime 65 lenses for a Marks and Spencer commercial. He got in touch after the shoot with some quick, off-the-cuff feedback about what benefits the large-format system brought.
“When I started work on this project with the director, we had two principal ideas in mind: we wanted to create visuals that were inspired by iconic photographers, and we wanted to make a colorful film,” says Boucard. “I immediately proposed the ALEXA 65 to achieve this look, because a sensor more the size of medium format stills instantly gives you a photographic look. You can still use wide lenses with nice depth of field and not too much distortion, but what blew my mind when I started work on set was the color range and how the camera gives you more detail in the colors. The skin tones are rich, but still natural and cinematic.”
Having opted to work with the ALEXA 65 camera for this color-intensive project, Boucard was then faced with the wide choice of different lens series now available from ARRI Rental for the system, ranging from modern to vintage and customizable optics. “I chose the Prime 65 lenses, because I was looking for as much color contrast as possible,” notes the cinematographer. “This is a complete lens series, so you can have wide angles, but also long lenses like the 300 mm. It was such a pleasure to create the look and tell the story with this camera that I can't wait to have it on my next feature film project.”
