AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR captured with ALEXA IMAX® cameras
Marvel's new film was shot entirely with the ALEXA IMAX camera, a customized version of the ALEXA 65 system, supplied by ARRI Rental.
The partnership between ARRI Rental and IMAX Corporation was formed in 2015 with the aim of co-developing a next-generation 2D digital camera to continue IMAX’s long history of truly immersive cinema. The result was the ALEXA IMAX 65 mm camera, based on ARRI Rental’s exclusive ALEXA 65 system, which provides stunningly lifelike images with pristine clarity, incredibly fine detail, vivid colors and high dynamic range for superior contrast.
Immediately after its launch, the ALEXA IMAX camera system began to be used on a variety of high-profile, visually ambitious productions. Credits include Marvel’s CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR, Clint Eastwood’s SULLY and TRANSFORMERS: THE LAST KNIGHT.
Up until now, the ALEXA IMAX camera has tended to be used for selected sequences that would benefit from exceptional image quality, but AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR represents the first film to be shot with it entirely. Directors Joe and Anthony Russo, with cinematographer Trent Opaloch, utilized up to 12 ALEXA IMAX cameras during peak shooting periods to capture the superhero ensemble—an unprecedented assembly of Marvel characters. The 65 mm format will provide audiences with a fittingly cinematic spectacle for a film that marks the 10-year anniversary of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The ALEXA 65 system, from which the ALEXA IMAX camera derives, has been used on more than 70 productions since it became available in 2015. The majority have used the ALEXA 65 as their main unit A-camera, and many have relied on optics designed and developed in-house by ARRI Rental, among them the Prime 65, Prime 65 S and Prime DNA lens sets.
